Development and study of Swept Source (SS) and Spectral Domain (SD) Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) systems

OCT investigations on different materials for dentistry, on teeth and on the soft tissue of the mouth

OCT endoscopic investigations for gastroenterology



The present grant proposal involves 5 teams, led by the Optomechatronics Research Group (www.3omgroup.appspot.com/) of the Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad (CO). Two academic and clinical institutions are involved: Arad County University Hospital (partner P1) and University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes Timisoara, Faculty of Medical Dentistry (P3). A top company for medical analyses, SC Bioclinica SA (P2), leader in the field in Western Romania will provide histological feed-back for the imaging techniques to be developed, and it will apply, as well as P1 and P3, the OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) systems and devices that will result from the project. A dynamic SME focused on precision mechanics, SC Inteliform SRL (P4) will manufacture the prototypes of the endoscope MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) and of the handheld OCT probes, thus expanding its capabilities to micro-mechanics. The project comprises collaborative links on OCT with UoRochester, NY (where the PI was a Fulbright Senior on OCT, 2009-2010), UoKent, UK (where the PI is a Visiting Scholar, also on OCT), and with CUNY, NY (Nanofabrication Laboratory), on MEMS. Two Visiting scientists from the latter two institutions will be employed in the CO team for the summer time of each year of the project. The project objectives comprise: (i) The development of Swept Source (SS) and Spectral Domain (SD) OCT systems centered on different wavelengths, with high resolutions and fast acquisition speeds, suitable for imaging hard and soft tissue, for in vivo (but also ex vivo) medical investigations, in gastroenterology and colonoscopy, with P1 and P2, and in teeth, mouth, and materials for dentistry, with P3; (ii) The development of several OCT handheld and endoscope MEMS probes; (iii) A range of biomedical investigations in gastroenterology and dentistry; (iv) Treatments will also be approached by coupling aiming and treatment lasers through the OCT handheld and endoscope probes to be developed.



Dezvoltarea si studiul unor sisteme de Tomografie Optica de Coerenta (OCT), atat cu surse laser scanate in frecventa (SS OCT), cat si de tip spectral (SD OCT);

Dezvoltarea unor probe de mana si a unora de tip endoscopic, inclusiv de tip MEMS (Micro Sisteme Electro-Mecanice) pentru OCT;

Investigatii de tip OCT asupra unor diferite materiale dentare, pe dinti si pe tesut moale in cavitatea bucala;

Investigatii OCT de tip endoscopic pentru gastro-enterologie.



Proiectul implica 5 echipe, conduse de Optomechatronics Research Group (www.3omgroup.appspot.com/) de la Universitatea Aurel Vlaicu Arad (CO). Doua institutii academice si clinice sunt implicate: Spitalul Clinic de Urgenta Arad (Partner P1) si Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie Victor Babes Timisoara, Facultea de Stomatologie (P3). O companie de top din domeniul analizelor medicale, SC Bioclinica SA (P2), lider in domeniu in partea de Vest a Romaniei va asigura feed-back-ul histologic pentru tehnicile de imagistica ce vor fi dezvoltate, si va aplica, la fel cu P1 si P3, sistemele OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) si despozitivele care vor rezulta din proiect. Un IMM dinamic focusat pe mecatronica, SC Inteliform SRL (P4) va produce prototipurile endoscoapelor MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) si probele de mana pentru OCT, extinzand astfel capabilitatile catre micro-mecanica. Proiectul cuprinde colaborari in OCT cu Univ. Rochester, NY (unde directorul a fost Fulbright Senior in OCT, 2009-2010), Univ. Kent, UK (unde directorul este Visiting Scholar, tot in OCT), si cu CUNY, NY (Nanofabrication Laboratory), pe MEMS. Doi Visiting scientists din aceste doua institutii vor fi angajati in echipa CO team pe durata verii (in general) in fiecare an al proiectului. Obiectivele proiectului curpind: (i) dezvoltarea unor sisteme OCT Swept Source (SS) si Spectral Domain (SD) systems centrate pe diferite lungimi de unda, cu rezolutii inalte si viteze de achizitie inalte, adecvate pentru imagistica tesutului tare si moale, pentru investigatii medicale in vivo (dar de asemenea ex vivo), in gastroenterologie si colonoscopie, cu P1 si P2, si pentru dinti, gura si materiale pentru stomatologie, cu P3; (ii) dezvoltarea unor probe de mana si endoscopice (MEMS) pentru OCT; (iii) o gama de investigatii biomedicale in gastroenterologie si stomatologie; (iv) vor fi de asemenea abordate tratamente cupland lasere de investigatie si de tratament prin probele de mana si endoscopice OCT care vor fi dezvoltate.
